Writing

Writing Rationale

Our writing curriculum covers the national curriculum but to a greater degree of depth, utilising links between reading and writing. We place great emphasis on developing pupil’s vocabulary across reading and writing through the delivery of high-quality texts that motivate and inspire.

We provide  engaging and enjoyable activities that inspire and motivate our pupils to express themselves through writing. As a result, our children develop a strong sense of purpose, understanding who they are writing for and what they aim to achieve with their writing.

Through careful curriculum design, our pupils experience writing across the four purposes (writing to inform, persuade, entertain and discuss) and use a range of genres to present their writing often linked to our topics.

At Lindfield, we recognise the interconnected nature of knowledge and skills, ensuring they are continually revisited and reinforced over time. This approach allows pupils to retrieve and recall previously learned concepts, laying a solid foundation upon which to build new understanding.

As our pupils move forward in their learning, they come across familiar types of texts that become more challenging. This helps them strengthen what they already know and gain a deeper understanding, boosting their confidence and interest in the subject. Furthermore, we address the essential "transcriptional" skills of writing, such as handwriting and spelling, through dedicated lessons. By integrating these skills into broader writing activities, pupils learn to apply them in real-world contexts. Moreover, our teachers offer clear and inspiring examples of writing during lessons, guiding pupils and providing them with valuable inspiration for their own writing journeys.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

Our current curriculum highlights the importance of children's grammar, punctuation and spelling knowledge. The below booklets will be helpful to support their learning.
