Reading Rationale
We are incredibly proud of our positive reading ethos. Our priority is to promote a life-long love of reading which will in turn support pupils on their journey to becoming confident writers and ‘allow them access to the full curriculum on offer.’ (Ofsted 2019)
Quality texts lie at the heart of our curriculum. We believe that ‘It is through being immersed in quality literature that pupils begin to realise the power of words and imagination in making stories come alive.’ (Meek, 1998). We ensure that all pupils have positive experiences of reading and nurture those who require further support on their reading journey.
At Lindfield, we prioritise the development of reading skills and nurturing a love for reading. We understand that literacy is fundamental for academic success and lifelong learning. That's why we have carefully designed a comprehensive and engaging reading curriculum that focuses on building both knowledge and skills across various genres.
Our curriculum is thoughtfully structured to ensure progression, covering a wide range of topics and themes to broaden our pupils horizons. We believe in the power of literature to spark curiosity and empathy, so we provide diverse reading materials that reflect different cultures and experiences.
Furthermore, we place a strong emphasis on establishing consistent reading routines throughout our academy and within each year group. By integrating reading into our daily practices, we demonstrate to our pupils the importance we place on literacy and encourage them to make reading a priority in their lives.
These books represent some of the key texts used across terms in each year group to enhance and support our writing purposes and experiences:
