Home Learning

Homework is an important and necessary feature of Year 6. It is not only a useful exercise in independence but also prepares the children for secondary school and reinforces work taking place in the classroom. This applies whatever the ability of the child. Homework will be set on a Friday and due back the following Wednesday. Generally it will include a piece of grammar, maths, spellings and times tables and occasionally a piece of writing. We also want you to encourage your child to read a wide range of texts on a regular basis. The children will need to write book reviews and participate in Book Battles on some of the texts they read.

Each week the children will be given a spelling test related to a spelling pattern taught that week. Every half term the children will be tested on the year 5/6 words.

PE kits

It is very important that children have their PE kits in school EVERY DAY. PE sessions are dependent on the weather and we want to go outside as often as we can. Please ensure that children have suitable kit for indoor (Lindfield logo PE top or white t-shirt and green shorts, white socks and trainers) and outdoor sessions (as indoor plus tracksuit bottoms and a warm jumper).

Equipment

In preparation for secondary school, children are encouraged to be responsible for their own equipment.

This may include:

  • Waterbottle
  • Blue handwriting pen
  • Coloured fine liners (not felt tips)
  • Folding ruler

Term Topics

The Battle of Britain

This term we will be learning about WWII and specifically the Battle of Britain. We will visit Newhaven Fort, build our own shelters and have a visit from Mrs Wood – an evacuee during WWII. Bikeability also takes place during the first few weeks back, so don’t forget to get those bikes ready!

Magical Mysteries

The children will spend this term developing their skills to ‘read like writers’ and ‘write like readers’ and emulate the writing style of a range of authors including J K Rowling. We plan to visit the Warner Bros. Studio to inspire children’s writing and develop a greater understanding of how text becomes film. Transition mentors from local secondary schools will work with the children to prepare them for secondary school. We will also spend time preparing for the annual residential on the Isle of Wight.

New Adventures

This term the children will complete SAT tests, take part in the Isle of Wight Residential, participate in Sports Days and perform in our end of year production! Our focus this term is on 'New Adventures' 'Journeys' and moving on to secondary school. We will be learning about coasts, geology and evolution within science. The children will attend an induction day at their chosen secondary school. Together with other transitional sessions the school is required to deliver a programme of sex education by the end of Year 6. This is normally done in the summer term prior to the children moving on to secondary school. This will be spread across a number of PSHE sessions throughout the term.
