Help Your Children to Have a Balanced Diet

There are many ways that we can help our kids to develop healthy eating habits. Healthy eating isn’t complicated, and for most children (and adults!) it boils down to eating less junk food and more fruit, vegetables and wholegrain foods. We should also drink water rather than sweetened drinks. Having a good diet helps prevent a range of serious illnesses now and in later life.

Captain's Table

Lindfield Primary Academy has introduced the Captain's Table in the lunch hall. Every Friday one child will be selected from each class to join Marcus Still or Vanessa Smith at the Captain's table. This is an opportunity to promote healthy eating, good table manners and good behaviour in the lunch hall. It is also an opportunity for the children to ask Mr Still and Mrs Smith anything they like and to meet and talk to children from different year groups. The Captain's table is decorated with a tablecloth to make it a special occasion. The children love it - Lily Frewing from Cherry class said it was good because she got to talk to Mr Still about her work!

Food Technology Masterclass at Oathall

A group of children from Years 4,5 & 6 went to Oathall school this week to bake some low sugar cookies. The children all had a great time making the cookies, using the ovens and then the best part - tasting and evaluating their cookies! They were all delicious! The children even had to wash up and clean down their workstations when they had finished. All great life skills and ones which they can continue to practice at home - especially the washing up!

The children were fantastic and a real credit to the school. In fact there were so amazing we have been invited to take a further ten students in the summer term.

Nutrition Workshops for Years 4 & 5

In February Years 4 & 5 were lucky to have workshops in their classes with Mike Martin, a clinical nutritionist.

Mike spoke to the children about:

  • What It Means To Be Healthy
  • How Food Can Effect Our Health & Our Bodies
  • What A Balanced Diet Actually Is
  • 6 Main Nutrients That Make Up Our Food
  • Examples Of Healthy Meals
  • The Importance Of Cooking

This was followed by a quiz about nutrition, where the children were able to demonstrate just how much they had learned.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the sessions, which were very beneficial.
